Clinical Assessment
If you wish to commence therapy, you will be required to have a clinical assessment. This takes about an hour and is an informal process where we take information such as your presenting issues, brief family history and any risks such as substance misuse. A clinical assessment is an important process in establishing the right intervention for you.
Individual therapy
This is a safe space for you to look at issues you feel are having a significant impact on your day-to-day life. This can be present issues or issues from the past. We first complete a clinical assessment to establish the therapy goals and what specific issues you feel you need to work on. We can then decide if short term therapy (up to around 10-12 sessions) or long-term therapy is best suited to your needs.
Group
therapy
According to Yalom in The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, “Many patients enter therapy with the disquieting thought that they are unique in their wretchedness, that they alone have certain frightening or unacceptable problems, thoughts, impulses and fantasies.” Group therapy can debunk that myth and give us the experience of connectedness.
Why group therapy? In group therapy adaptation is harder for the client as they are seen by many people who may hold differing views and perceptions.
Group therapy can help break social isolation and loneliness. You experience the gaze of many as opposed to one person. There is potential to make friends with peers, therefore continuing the group support in-between sessions.
Mindfulness
Day to day life comes with its own stresses and challenges. Little Lotus Therapy delivers Mindfulness workshops that incorporates breathwork, sound, music and meditation. Mindfulness can be useful in managing stress and anxiety if you do not feel a talking therapy is right for you or alongside a talking therapy.
Mindfulness is used to facilitate a greater sense of well-being through working with the breath/body. Mindfulness is a large area but at its core it works on the principle of gaining a deeper sense of relaxation by changing the brain waves from a beta state (conscious state – reading, thinking, speaking) to an alpha state (wakeful rest, meditative state).
The purpose of Mindfulness is to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, put simply that is like pressing the brakes on the car. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, you lower the adrenaline and cortisol in your body.
Taking time out for yourself, actively paying attention to your parasynaptic nervous system can benefit your long-term health and well-being.
